Silent Night

Kaitlain looked up at her apartment window. It was dark, and the shades were drawn, just as they should be, but things seemed quiet, too quiet. The sidewalk was deserted around her, and the wind was calm.
Kaitlain slowly made her way toward the doors of the lobby of the three-story apartment building. Even the lobby was empty except for the receptionist quietly reading a book at her desk. Kaitlan looked behind her and all around. Something was very wrong. The silence was unusual, even for a Saturday night. It seemed everyone was busy except for her. Kaitlain wiped a lone tear from the corner of her ey and proceeded toward the elevator. Punching the correct buttons, Kaitlan was slowly brought to the second floor.
She stepped from the lift and walked down the hallways, her footsteps echoing in both directions. She reached her three-room apartment and opened the door. No sound was heard as the door swung open. The small calico cat that was Kaitlan's best friend greeted her and longed for attention. Kaitlan scooped up the purring kitten and flicked on the overhead light in her silent living room.
